It was Jim’s turn again. “Did Dan have any enemies?”
“He wouldn’t tell me that kind of thing.”
Officer Prick interrupted. “Where were you this Sunday?”
“Sunday? God. Sunday. The library. The cafeteria. Here. I hung out with Chloe that night. Mostly the library, though. Got some papers due.”
“Can someone else attest to that?” Officer Prick asked.
“Attest?” This guy was scaring me.
Jim cut in, “When was the last time you saw Dan, eh?”
“The last time I saw him was last Wednesday, I think. We went on a double date with Stefan and Chloe the night before, and I left my ring at his apartment. I went back the next day to retrieve it, and … well, let’s just say I didn’t want to see him after that.”
“How come, eh?” Officer Prick wanted to know. I knew they’d eventually see the video, if they hadn’t already. It made me a victim, though, not a killer.
“It’s kinda personal,” I said.
Jim assured me, “That’s fine for now. One day, however, we might need to follow up on that. That’s okay?”
“Yeah. I mean, you guys are cops, you can do whatever you want, right?”
“Now Jenny, ya have your rights,” Jim said sweetly. “I guess we’re aboot done for now. If he calls, you’ll let us know?”
“One last thing,” Officer Prick butted in. “You said you were in the caf. Did you use one of those campus credit cards?”
The “caf” was his word for cafeteria. I pretended to think about his question. “Ummm … yes. Yes, I did. And yes, if Dizzy—I mean, Danny—calls I’ll obviously let you know.”
They both gave me their contact info and then later, as they were leaving, Jim lingered in the doorway. “Hey, can I ask you a really big favor?” he said.
“Yeah. Anything,” I replied eagerly.
“I have a brother. Tim. He’s a student here at Molson. Anyway, he’s been having a tough time making friends, ya know, and I was wondering maybe … maybe you could, ya know, have lunch with him?”
It was an odd request, but anything to please my investigating officer! “Sure, Jim.”
“Great. How aboot I’ll have him call you?”
Wow, if there was one sign that you weren’t a suspect, this was it. And it worked out perfectly, because I could use Tim to keep tabs on Dizzy’s case. I was totally a femme fatale, but obviously I wasn’t gonna kill Jim or Tim or anything.
Unless, of course, they did something to deserve it.
